Some 600 came to Guelph Riveride Park to celebrate Canada Day. And what a fine event it was!!
Our beloved Robert Munsch, Patron of GGS, told us three of our all-time favouries. His very, very first story, he told us, - -Mortimor, followed by The Paper Bag Princess and the one, many claim brings them to tears, Love You Forever. It was special to hear Robert, since his health does not always allow him to come out for many public apprerances.
There were official government greetings: from Ottawa, our new MP, Dominque O'Rourke, and Guelph City Councillor, Phil Alt, - - Phil a longtime faithful supporter of GGS events.
Stories and songs by another of Guelph's beloved, gifted entertainers, James Gordon. His lyrics made us think deeply about the Land, Canada and current realities. At the same time he made us laugh. James is great!
Lady Agnes, (Barb Vollock) took us back to the summer of 1886 and her train journey across the country from Ottawa to Vancouver with her husband, the Honourable Sir John A. Macdonald, Prime Minister. After each stop across the country, we joined the costumed crier in a lusty, "All Aboard."
Among Lady Agnes' many stories of sights and adventures, perhaps one stands out. She explained how she actually got her wish for an unubstructed view of the mountain scenery, by sitting on chair nailed to a platform on the cowcatcher of the locomotive. An adventurous, strong-willed woman.
Larry Gibbs took us back to the one-room school and his experiences, including students' chores.
